Transfer of Stimulus Control
Definition
The shift of control over a response from a prompt to the natural stimulus that is supposed to occasion it. Every prompting procedure exists to bring this about, and it is complete when the learner responds correctly to the natural cue with no prompt at all. It is also the process by which, for example, a mand prompted by an echoic model comes under the control of the motivating operation alone.
In plain language
The moment the learner responds to the real cue instead of to the help. It is the goal of all prompting.
Example
A learner who used to need a pointed finger now touches the correct card on the instruction alone.
Not transfer of stimulus control
A learner who still waits for the pointed finger every time. Control remains with the prompt.
