What the obligation is
Services end for many reasons — goals met, a family moves, funding stops, a practitioner leaves — and the obligation is the same in each: plan it, give notice, document where things stand, and hand over to someone qualified. Leaving a position without arranging continuity is serious enough that the handbooks list it among the events a certificant must self-report. For a technician the version is smaller but real: give the notice your employer requires, and walk the incoming technician and the supervisor through the current programs rather than leaving a file. Discharge when services are no longer needed is also part of this: continuing because it is convenient or billable is its own failure.
In plain language
When you leave or services end, give notice, write down where things stand, and hand over properly. Nobody should be left without a plan or a provider.
What this looks like
- Notice given in time for a real handover, not on the last day.
- A written summary of current programs, data and next steps for whoever takes over.
- A transition meeting including the family, not just the professionals.
- Discharging when goals are met rather than continuing out of habit.
Where people get caught
- Delaying the announcement to avoid unsettling families, which removes the time to plan.
- Treating a file as a handover.
- Taking records with you when you go.
- Continuing services that are no longer needed because the funding is authorised.
If you are not sure
Ask your supervisor what your organisation's notice and transition process requires, and start it earlier than feels necessary. The families need the lead time more than you do.
