Negative Punishment
Also called: type II punishment
Definition
A decrease in the future frequency of a behavior produced by the removal of a stimulus, usually a reinforcer, immediately after it. Response cost and time-out from reinforcement are the common procedural forms. As with all punishment, the definition is by effect on behavior.
In plain language
A behavior happens less because something the person wanted was taken away. The loss comes right after the behavior.
Example
A token is removed each time a student shouts out, and shouting out falls.
Not negative punishment
A reprimand after shouting out. Something was added, so if shouting falls this is positive punishment.
