Definition
A verbal operant in which a written or printed stimulus evokes a spoken response that corresponds to it — reading aloud — without any requirement that the reader understands it. Comprehension involves other operants layered on top.
In plain language
Reading words out loud. Saying the word the print shows, whether or not you know what it means.
Example
A learner sees the word "stop" on a sign and says "stop."
Not textual
A learner hears "stop" and writes it. Hearing to writing is transcription.
