Performance Diagnostic
Also called: performance analysis, can't-do versus won't-do, PDC
Definition
A function-based assessment of why a staff member is not performing as expected, before a remedy is chosen. It distinguishes skill deficits (the person cannot do it) from problems of antecedents (unclear expectations, missing materials), of consequences (no reinforcement, competing contingencies) and of resources. Training fixes only the first; the others need different solutions.
In plain language
Working out why a staff member is not doing the job right before deciding what to do about it. Sometimes they cannot; sometimes nothing supports doing it.
Example
Data sheets keep going unfinished. The supervisor finds the sheets are stored in another room, and moves them; no retraining was needed.
Not performance diagnostic
Scheduling a retraining for every performance problem without checking whether the person already knows how.
